Senior Principal Designer / CDM Advisor

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Principal Designer / CDM Advisor to join our growing HSEQ team. We are looking for someone who is client focused, passionate about a service that excels and will add to our wide breadth of experience and working knowledge across a range of construction projects.

Our small but growing HSEQ team operates within our multi-disciplinary consultancy working for a range of clients, so adaptability and agility are key to the role.

Job Overview and Core Competencies

A suitable candidate will be responsible for the delivery of the following (not necessarily exhaustive):

  • Complying with the responsibilities of the principal designer under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (“CDM 2015”).
  • Informing and assisting clients in discharging their duties at each stage of the process under CDM 2015.
  • Visiting sites and carrying out an initial appraisal to establish existing hazards and site restrictions.
  • Attendance at design team meetings, workshops, and project progress meetings.
  • Setting up the design risk register and carrying out CDM design reviews / workshops with the design team to focus on the significant design, construction, and operation and mainteance risks.
  • Assist designers to design out risk, and maintain design risk register.
  • Preperation of RIBA Stage CDM / Principal Designer reports.
  • Ensuring that designers have established safe methods for construction of unusual or complex designs and making this available as part of the pre-construction information.
  • Advising and assisting clients in the appointment of designers and contractors
  • Preparation and issue of the Pre Construction Information.
  • Submission of the F10 Notification to the HSE and review of Construction Phase Plans prior to works starting on site.
  • Carrying out site inspections during the construction phase to monitor compliance.
  • Collating and delivering the Health and Safety File at completion of the project.
  • Representing the company in a professional and diligent manner; meeting, negotiating and corresponding with clients to form strong working relationships.
  • Assisting with Business development and generating new principal designer work.

A suitable candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum 3 – 4 years’ post-qualification experience in the property and construction industry performing the Principal Designer and/or CDM Client Advisor role under CDM 2015.
  • Hold the NEBOSH Construction Certificate and be working towards the NCRQ / NEBOSH Diploma Level 6 (if preferable).
  • TechIOSH / NEBOSH or willing and able to work towards achieving the same or similar qualifications and accreditations;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects (in excess of 20) with minimal supervision.
  • A deep understanding of Health and Safety Legislation and CDM 2015.
  • Ideally with design and consultancy experience as oppossed to just on site health and safety experience.
  • Private practice experience preferred;
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in the management and administration of activities pursuant to the CDM 2015 Regulations;
  • Strong experience reporting in connection with design and/or construction contracts;
  • Excellent oral, written and numeracy skills;
  • Ability to self-manage as well as working as part of an integrated team;
  • Accountable and responsible for professional conduct;
  • Capable of supporting with the management of a small team and mentoring junior colleagues;
  • Proficient in the use of IT including Microsoft software, especially Microsoft Word and Excel;
  • Hold a valid, clean driver’s licence.
