Completed in 2016 City Wharf, on a brownfield site bordering the London boroughs of Hackney and Islington, is a canalside, residential development that offers contemporary urban living within a wooded area that provides a sense of the countryside.

A challenge for the site inspector

The construction of the development’s basement required a number of extremely complex construction methods which included:

  • 2,600 piles
  • Bulk excavation using 26 horizontal steel props of 1m width and 21m length
  • Tanking of the secant pile faces, pile caps and basement slabs
  • Dewatering and pressure grouting to manage the ingress of ground and canal water

Martin Ward, our Director of Quality Management, commented: “This exciting journey commenced just before the London Olympics and completed in early 2016. The collaborative spirit throughout was a really enjoyable experience, working with our client A2Dominion, United Living and the wider design team.”
